Seine used to be a graphic designer, her role was more involved in finding visual solutions for various commercial use. After years of working in front of a computer, she decided to take a break and adjust her career direction. After trying out a floral design class, she felt she should keep on learning it. Now she already obtained a teaching certificate from Japan and started her floral teaching career in J-Flower Shanghai.

Seine shared her new passion of floral design with me at her work,  I can feel the fun of playing new materials and techniques also excites me. Seine showed me how to utilise brunches’s ductility to construct spacial form to support the design, which reminded me once an architect friend told me why the wooden structure house is more safe during the earthquake. Solid wood material is very hard to get bended completely, and it also has its own wills that it tends to return to its original form. There is an invisible force hidden in nature, which we are too busy to feel in the busy city life.

Q1: What is your childhood dream? What about now?
S: I have a lot childhood dreams and they changes while growing up. But now it is hard to say specifically as I know nothing is easy to achieve. I’d rather to describe it as an state of mind – do what you like, and be with someone you love.

Q2: What makes you to go down the floral design path? How does it influence you?
S: I was on a break from work and had the time to try out some new things I always wanted to learn. I was quite lucky to have met a good floral design teacher, so I slowly went into this direction. With the encouragement from my teacher, I went to Japan to get my floral design teacher certificate and make it into my career.
I do like being a graphic designer, but dealing with flowers still related to design, and getting more in touch with nature while avoiding sitting long hours in front a computer. Now I have much more patient in doing things, and pays more attention in the natural environments, I would like to learn more about different plants’ names and their behaviours.

Q3: Is there any difficult moments and interesting stories you can share with us?
S: language is a problem for me when I was doing the floral course in Japan. The courses normally were taught in Japanese and occasionally in English. Luckily my teacher from Shanghai came with me and did the simultaneous interpretation.

There are a lot of fun things, for example, you can observe different students’ personality in the process of doing floral design: the ones keep change their minds on the flower selection are indecisive in their daily life; the work from the quiet students tend to be more elegant, the work from the talkative ones tend to be more colourful; the ones with stronger characteristic like to jump out of the instruction and create something new…

Q4: Are you following any floral design genre?
S: I am following Mani Flower Design School’s style, which does not belong to any particular genre. The school has 50 years history in Japan, has a well mix of east and west floral characteristics. While studying all kinds of techniques, it teaches you how to observe the beauty and differences between each plant, each of them is an individual like a person, they have their own life, freedom and unlimited possibilities.

(I really like the half-way done work on the left, so Wabi-sabi… )

Q5: From making your own floral work to teaching others, how do you feel from the role changing?
S: Creating my own piece just need to follow my own instinct, it is about dealing with the relationship between myself and plants. As for teaching, it is about dealing with people, I have to be more proactive to deliver my points, also observe and react on students’ response. I am not very good at dealing with people, at the beginning I was very nervous getting out of my comfort zone, I am grateful that I got a lot of encouragement from my teacher and students.

Q6: Do you think we can communicate with plants?
S: I think we can. Every plant needs its own living condition and makes each one unique character. If you treat them well, they will return you with blooming flowers and lush foliage, but it is not a shorten thing and acquire much more engagements.

Q7: What is your current book?
S: “Chinese colour history”, it is about the colour evolvement in Chinese history, the people’s changing taste towards colour…
